MEDCAL

Community wide heart disease Prevention

Over the last 8 years MEDCAL have developed a series of computer based RISK Assessment and heart disease education programs which together produce a community wide integrated heart disease prevention strategy.

The three main parts are:

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Prevention program for health professionals. a Consulting room computer program for assessing and educating patients on heart disease and its prevention.

RISK CHD Education Tutors . A self assessment heart disease education and risk assessment tool for use by and in the community

RISK after the event. A version of Risk for use in hospitals, in rehabilitation units and on wards. It includes a relatives of CHD patients advice program.

This community wide system is designed to reduce the incidence of CHD in the community by substantial amounts at reasonable cost. Preliminary figures suggest a 50% reduction in MI admissions is possible at a cost of approx. £125000 over 3 years in a PCG of 125000 population. Savings on drugs and admissions could be expected to equal or better these costs.
